As we all held our breath in anticipation to hear the latest news of the Amazon Runner’s progress, Brian Lynch has been tackling the toughest race of his life.

After 135 km through jungle, swamps and unimaginable exhaustion, Brian had a decision to make: would he accept the medal for his incredible 4 stage achievement or would he challenge himself even further by undertaking another 140 km to complete the 6 stage race?

Having taken more than 15 hours to complete the 4th stage due to severe pain, particularly in his destroyed feet, Brian decided that the best choice for him was to accept the medal for his 135 km accomplishment.

“I really don’t know how I finished my final stage. I was up at 4.30 am and couldn’t walk. It took me over 10 minutes to walk 50 metres to get a medic to tape up my feet for the day ahead,” Brian explained. Before starting the final stage, he thought that he would not be able to run for more than 5 minutes without pulling out of the race from the agony.

However, the self-proclaimed “stubborn aul’ bugger” pushed himself to the limit to reach the finish line and complete the formidable race section.

“When I got near the finish line… I was so overwhelmed that I had tears in my eyes – lucky that it was dark!” joked the runner. “I don’t think too many people gave me a hope in hell of finishing and when I did, they were as overjoyed as I was.”

Brian was flying to Rio de Janeiro yesterday to spend his last days in Brazil seeing the sights and enjoying a real bed for the first time in days before returning to Ireland this Friday.

The whole CGV team is very proud of Brian’s achievements in the Brazilian Amazon and awaits his return to Dublin to hear about his adventure in full. Congratulations, Brian!
