Celestial Green Ventures is pleased to announce that we are sponsoring a turtle on its journey back home. Tomorrow the CEO of Celestial Green Ventures, Ciaran Kelly, will appear on RTE Radio One’s Mooney Goes Wild, to discuss Celestial Green Ventures, our involvement with the turtle, and more. The show airs from 3 to 4.30pm, and we’ll be posting on social media to let you know when to tune in.

Leona, as the turtle is known, is part of an endangered species known as loggerhead turtles, and was found on Quilty Bay, County Clare, on the 20th of November 2013. She was discovered by a passer-by, and, as there is no official department that deals with such cases of wild animals in Ireland, Galway’s aquarium, Atlantaquaria, stepped up to nurse her back to health.

On Friday the 6th of June, Rita Gately, County Veterinary Officer in Galway County Council, went on Mooney Goes Wild to discuss Leona. During the show, Ms. Gately spoke about the plans to release Leona back into the wild. Loggerhead turtles are mainly found in either the Mediterranean or Caribbean seas, but it is impossible to know exactly where she comes from. Ms. Gately explained that the plan is to release Leona into warm waters, such as those around the Canary Islands, and that ideally, she would like to put a tracker on Leona.

As loggerhead turtles are an endangered species, it is important that we try to learn as much as we can about their behaviour. The device will take 250 readings a day, recording information on depth, temperature, GPS location, and light levels. As Leona’s story encompasses a number of elements, such as biodiversity protection, scientific research, and of course, Ireland, Celestial Green Ventures has decided to sponsor the cost of Leona’s tag & tracking.

Leona is due to be released sometime in August, although the exact details have yet to be finalised. To learn more about Leona, or to keep track of her location when she is released, please click here. While other loggerhead turtles are currently being tracked, Leona is the only one who will be journeying across the world, making hers a truly unique story.
