• Celestial Green Ventures spends the day at Sophia

In 2014, Celestial Green Ventures selected five projects to receive funding as part of our Social Funding Programme. Sophia’s ‘Gardening Project’ was one of the successful applications.

In acceptance of an invite extended by Sophia’s project manager Niamh Cullen, CGV were able to spend the day at the project residence and gain an insight into how the organisation works.

After being treated to lunch upon arrival, CGV’s Kristen Baird and Paula Torres were then given a tour around the residence and its facilities. Some of which included a crèche, named the “Nurturing Centre,” for pre-school children within the residence as well as outside, the wisdom centre for meditation and reflection, and, of course, the Gardening Club Project’s greenhouse.

Arriving to the greenhouse, Kristen and Paula were introduced to the project’s horticulturist, John, as he politely excused himself to go dig up some foxglove that will be planted in the greenhouse and flower in the early summer. In John’s absence, his gardening prodigies showed us the work of their green thumbs that ranged from sunflowers and African lilies, to tomato and chili plants. To the CGV girls’ delight, they were even given a chili plant each that, when fully grown, they will be able to use in their meals.

CGV’s general manager Paula was happy to be able to witness first-hand the effort put in by each member of Sophia to ensure that all residents are taken care of in all aspects of life.

“Seeing the Sophia Cork Street residence has given us great insight into the work being done by the organisation, and we were surprised to see how large the facility was and hear about the numerous projects going on. Their concept of helping anyone no matter their age or background whilst working on a tight budget is inspiring and CGV is thrilled to have been able to help their gardening project continue to flourish.”

The Gardening Club are planning to extend their activities in the spring by beginning to grow herbs in addition to the flowers, vegetables and fruits currently being cultivated.
