In 2014, Celestial Green Ventures selected five projects to receive funding as part of our Social Funding Programme. The North Dublin Befriending Service was one of the successful applications.
Last month, the North Dublin Befriending Service visited Dublin Zoo as part of their Summer Social project sponsored by Celestial Green Ventures. Originally the plan was for everyone to get the train down to Cork and visit Fota Island Wildlife Park. However, as train strikes were due to take place the following day, return trains to Dublin were expected to be booked out. So when members of the North Dublin Befriending Service met up, they decided to visit Dublin Zoo instead, but with the promise of going to Fota Island on a day that would be more convenient.
While the last-minute changes initially resulted in a few forlorn faces, the mood quickly elevated as the group arrived at the zoo in Phoenix Park, accompanied by CGV’s Simon Griffin. The group was also joined by zoologist Jason Devoy-Keegan, who told everyone about the various animals as they moved from enclosure to enclosure.
After meeting up at 10am, everyone spent the entire day visiting the wide range of animals the zoo has to offer, from the arctic wolf to the zebra. There were even a number of White-nosed Bearded Sakis, one of the endangered species found in our Trocano Araretama Project area. Dublin Zoo raises funds to help conservation efforts and is part of the European Zoo Breeding Programme for this species, and many others. In the end, everybody had a great time and learnt a lot about the importance of protecting endangered species.
Mr. Keegan spoke fondly of the experience, stating “It was a pleasure walking around the fantastic facilities at Dublin Zoo, trying my best to answer all the interesting questions posed by the members. We all really enjoyed the day”.
Mr. Griffin added “It was great to come along and see the great work that the North Dublin Befriending Service does first-hand. We are really proud to be involved with this project”.
